Samsung Game Optimizing Service
Samsung's Game Optimizing Service (GOS) is an application designed for Samsung smartphone users, particularly during gameplay. It addresses issues such as frame drops and provides acceleration services, effectively managing the phone's heat generation. By optimizing GPU and CPU performance, GOS aims to prevent overheating caused by prolonged gaming sessions.
Recently, Samsung announced plans to push software updates soon, offering users a "Performance Priority" option to meet the diverse needs of its customers. The GOS software boasts several features, including enhancing game connection speeds and utilizing AI to optimize games, which can increase graphics processing efficiency by 60% and reduce SoC power consumption by 30%. All CPU cores run at maximum speed, ensuring optimal performance during gameplay.
One of the app's highlights is application management during gaming. By using installed game indexes (such as resolution settings, FPS limits, CPU/GPU frequencies, and heat control), GOS determines the optimal settings for each game. It also optimizes device heating during gameplay, adjusting system performance to minimize heat generation. If a game freezes, GOS optimizes performance by changing resolution settings, consuming less memory and battery power while achieving more stable performance.
However, GOS has recently sparked significant controversy. It has been alleged that the service actively limits the performance of certain games to prevent overheating. While this concept is well-intentioned, users have found that the performance restrictions extend beyond gaming apps to numerous other non-gaming applications. Professionals have even shared a list of over 10,000 apps that are affected by Samsung's GOS, causing significant debate.
Samsung responded that GOS is intended to monitor the phone's operational status, preventing lag, significant performance drops, and increased power consumption when running high-load games. The service is only applicable to large, resource-intensive games and should not impact regular apps. Regarding the list of apps that experience performance restrictions, Samsung clarified that this list is solely for quickly identifying whether a newly installed app is a game and is unrelated to GOS's functionality. In other words, not all apps on this list have restricted performance, and it is not a "blacklist".
Samsung also noted that benchmarking apps are not included in the GOS service list because they are not games and do not run for extended periods, reducing the likelihood of causing overheating. The company added that unlocking CPU and GPU performance limits could increase frame rates by about 10 frames in some games, but it does not recommend doing so.
Regarding concerns about whether enabling the Performance Priority mode, which could lead to overheating, would affect Samsung's free repair service, Samsung assured users that it would not. Performance Priority mode is a feature provided by Samsung, and if a device malfunctions within the warranty period, users can still enjoy free after-sales service. Samsung pledged to continue improving and optimizing this service based on customer feedback.
